Critics Consensus

Judd Apatow definitely delivers funny and perceptive scenes in This is 40, even if they are buried in aimless self-indulgence.

This Is 40 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online It's like if Knocked Up was instead titled This is 35, and This is 40 were chapter two. It's just redundant. Rated: C+ Sep 7, 2017 Full Review This Is 40 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) J. Hoberman Tablet This Is 40 is intermittently funny, frequently embarrassing and, at 134 minutes, quite a bit too long. May 5, 2016 Full Review This Is 40 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Donald Clarke Irish Times It is, in its quieter way, more pointlessly indulgent than The Matrix Revolutions. Rated: 1/5 Feb 15, 2013 Full Review This Is 40 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson You either take it as 134 long minutes of sweet-hearted comedy with martial strife mixed in or vice versa, namely a two-hour-plus argument between Mommy and Daddy. Rated: 4/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review This Is 40 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Despite the funny moments in This Is 40, the running time and the parts that do not age well are not doing the film any favors as it turns ten years old. Rated: 3/5 Dec 21, 2022 Full Review This Is 40 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Contains enough truth about marriages and families to outweigh the irritating details of the family’s financial situation and the film’s seemingly aimless structure. Andrea K The acting is fine in the movie. There are scenes that made me chuckle. Most of it felt disjointed and relying on shallow, cliché characters behaving in ways that didn't feel real for characters that are 40. I found myself at times wondering who was watching the kids as the two parents were off doing their own thing. Other times, I found myself wondering who much time was left in the movie. It was way too long. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review Ernest B We know three things for sure: the sun will rise in the east, it will set in the west, and Judd Apatow will always make an otherwise good movie 40 minutes too long. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Griffith J Hilariously seamless comedy that plays off the hard times in life. Depressing yet realistic with hopeful & healing messages about commitment & family. Career highs from Rudd & Mann with some of the most quick witted laughs ever. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/01/24 Full Review Oscar K A few laughs here and there, but mainly just awful unnatural dialogue and even bad acting, which is surprising considering the talent they packed, hence I suspect bad writing or directing. Perhaps the script was just so over-worked that it becomes impossible to deliver those dialogues in a natural way, I don't know, and I can't explain it, I just know it when I see it. Essentially, it feels like actors reading lines back and forth, lines that was way more funny in the writers head than to everyone else. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/22/24 Full Review Quentin T Couldn't finish this it was so bad. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Brian D 60%. Some genuine chuckles but overall just moderately funny. Some pretty outrageous moments. 1.5/5 rewatch Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Read all reviews
